A mug of hot water and lemon first thing in the morning has become a bit of a ritual for me over the last few years, it’s an amazing way to start the day. It’s so thirst quenching and full of hydrating electrolytes such as potassium, calcium and magnesium.
Lemons have so many health benefits, not only are they packed full of antioxidant, immune boosting, anti-inflammatory vitamin C, but they are great cleansers too, helping the detoxification processes of the liver and flushing out toxins. Lemons also cleanse the blood and the arteries, they are excellent for controlling blood pressure and for keeping the old ticker healthy.
Lemons also stimulate bile production – so just what you need to get those digestive juices fired up for the day, and on the theme of their digestive qualities, lemons can also relieve heartburn, indigestion and bloating. The pectin fibre content is essential for good colon health, so helpful for regular bowel movements. Pectin helps you feel fuller for longer too, fighting hunger cravings, which is always good to know when you have a few pounds to shed.
They may be acidic outside of the body, but once inside us lemons are incredibly alkalising, balancing pH levels and removing acidity, including dissolving uric acid to reduce pain and inflammation in the joints. They are also known to help with kidney stones and gallstones.
Antioxidants fight the damage caused by free radicals and promote the production of collagen, making lemons amazing for healthy and glowing skin. Their revitalising properties make them great mood enhancers and energy level boosters, all without the need for caffeine. Just the mere whiff of a lemon can brighten your mood and clear your mind.
So THAT’s why I love to start my day with a mug of hot water and lemon! It’s best to use recently boiled water, as scalding water can destroy those wonderfully active enzymes in fresh lemons, and you don’t want really cold water either first thing, as this will be a bit of a shock to your digestive system. Be sure to buy organic, unwaxed lemons to reduce your exposure to pesticides and chemicals. Just add a slice of lemon and a squeeze of the juice into your mug, top with hot water and let the wonders begin.
