So what is naturopathic nutrition? I get asked this all the time, the “naturopathic” bit seems to throw some people, but in a nutshell – naturopathic medicine is a system that focuses on the prevention of illness through using the healing power of nature.
The belief is that the mind, body, emotions, social factors and the environment are all interconnected to determine our health, and when the body’s own inherent healing systems break down, naturopathic practitioners work to repair and restore them by using methods, techniques, medicines and foods that are in harmony with nature. The 7 principles of naturopathic medicine are:
- Use the healing power of nature
- First do no harm – by using non-invasive, non-toxic treatments to minimise the risk of harmful side effects
- Find the underlying cause of illness
- Educating and emphasising self-responsibility for health
- Treat the whole person, taking in all the complex factors that make that person unique
- To prevent minor illnesses turning into more serious or chronic degenerative diseases
- To establish and maintain optimal health and promote wellness
I like to think the difference between modern medicine and naturopathy is like looking at a tree – with modern medicine treating just the leaves (the symptoms) and naturopathy treating the roots (the cause). In my practice as a naturopathic nutritionist, I use food as medicine to address the root cause of disease, rather than just the symptoms, treating the individual as a whole, and not just the parts that are falling off!
There is no one size fits all, each person has their own unique blueprint, and what’s right for one person doesn’t mean it’s right for the next. Your body is working so hard all of the time to heal and protect itself, and all it wants is to keep you in a state of balance, but sometimes it struggles to overcome certain obstacles and symptoms start to appear. My job as a naturopathic nutritionist is to identify any risk factors and to recommend appropriate changes and strategies to help you avoid disease. I help you become more conscious about the food and lifestyle choices you make, to show you how to connect those choices to your own health, to listen to your body and to help you lay the foundations for great health. It doesn’t just happen overnight, and it’s certainly not about feeling deprived and missing out. By learning how to eat wonderfully vibrant, tasty, delicious food you will be giving your body exactly what it needs, not just to survive, but to thrive.
