Detox is a word that’s been way over-used but it is a natural process, and a vital one that keeps us alive. As a naturopathic nutritional therapist I don’t just focus simply on digestion, although I do believe that good digestion leads to a healthy life, but I also realise that to have good digestion you must be detoxing properly. Every cell in your body is constantly working to remove toxins and it’s important to gently support this process. Detox is a natural step toward a better digestion. Good digestion leads to less inflammation, and less inflammation leads to less disease in this world.
Hippocrates said it best: “All disease begins in the gut”
If this is true and disease begins in the gut, aka your digestive system, then having a healthy and strong digestion is key. But did you know that when the body is toxic, your digestive system is weak? So even if you eat “clean” and only buy organic and hormone-free foods, you are still breathing toxicity in this world.
We live, eat and breathe toxicity every day. Look around your home and think of the paint on the walls, the carpets, the pesticides sprayed on your lawn, the fly spray, the household cleaners. Even if you are chemical-free in your home, is your skin care routine and makeup chemical free?
Even if you are doing your best to live a chemical-free life, we are still alive, and that means eating, breathing, and sleeping in a toxic environment. Unless you feel that are ready to live in a bubble or a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, then it is high time to give our bodies a bit of a break. My 14-Day Body Reset Programme is designed to give your body the healthy support it needs, at a cellular level.
Now detox is not a swear word or anything to be scared about. Instead, it’s exciting to think about your body and cells actually functioning. A detox is not all about going for days living on juices and water alone, but there is certainly no such thing as a quick fix. Detoxing or cleansing (whatever you want to call it) is all about lessening the toxic load in your body, a bit like taking out the rubbish!
When we are toxic, our body can’t perform its job. It can’t metabolise or detox properly, or absorb nutrients and minerals, or stay hydrated. It is a vicious cycle. You see, detoxification is necessary to be healthy, happy and free of disease. We all have some low level inflammation because again, we breathe, but even more so we are so stressed in this busy world. Every time you stress you create acid in your body. Your body is then forced to pull minerals to buffer the acid waste. The liver, lymph and kidneys begin to work hard to filter out the toxic load.
But what happens when the body is tired and clogged? When your digestive system isn’t working and can’t break down foods properly, it can’t focus on getting rid of the toxins. That means you feel bloated and fat, you get skin breakouts and all that jazz that keeps you tired.
When our detoxification process is impaired it can lead to:
- Difficult weight management
- Hormone imbalance
- Low energy
- Low sex drive
- Bad skin
- See where I am going with all of this?
By detoxing you will improve digestion and free your body of inflammation and toxins in the process. The foundation of this programme is NOT to ever feel deprived or starved. The goal is to help you learn how to eat good, whole nutritious foods and learn which foods are irritating your body and how to press the reset switch.
A cleanse or detox at any time of the year is always beneficial for your health, and I especially love to work with the seasons. As you restore your body back to balance and break free of old habits and faddy diets you become more in tune with your body and you will start to work out what it needs instinctively. You will better understand cravings, reset your tastebuds and learn how to eat and cook for good health and nutrition. Find out more HERE.
So, now that you’ve learned a little more about the benefits of detoxing, how can you start bringing it into your daily life?
Here are a few of my favourite ways to stay healthy and detox naturally:
- On waking, drink warm or room-temperature water with lemon and/or 1 tsp raw apple cider vinegar and/or add a dash of cinnamon or cayenne.
- Start your day by being positive – find a daily affirmation that gets you fired up. I love Liz Gilbert, Brené Brown, Gabrielle Bernstein, Louise Hay and Marianne Williamson.
- Drink fresh green juices or make your own green juice with 1 tsp. Neal’s Yard Remedies Organic Greens complex with some fruit and water.
- Aim for one meal that is super easy on your digestion per day like a smoothie, green juice or soup. Give that digestion a rest.
- Get a-moving and a-shaking. Yes, exercise is one of the best ways to detox your body.
- Drink plenty of water and add lemon, lime or grapefruit to flush the toxicity.
- Skin brushing is a great way to support the liver and get rid of those toxins.
- Be happy and grateful for life.
